This post was inspired by the realization that my schedule this semester isn’t conducive to attending meetups. Looks like I’ll be missing most — if not all — the awesome meetups around Vancouver this next 3 months. And that’s a shame because I find a lot of value from attending them.
But just because I can’t attend meetups doesn’t mean that you have to suffer with me. Below is a list of meetups and other marketing-related events that I’m aware of for January and early February 2011. I thought this might be a good idea because there are dedicated Twitter accounts (e.g. @BestJobsinVan) and blogs (example) for Marketing jobs in Vancouver, but there’s really nothing for events. (I’ve checked with Google, too.)
This is a couple of meetups I regularly attend. Visit Meetup.com if you’d like to search for more.
Third Tuesday Vancouver (January 20, Ceilis Irish Pub). This month’s meetup features a presentation from C.C. Chapman, co-author of Content Rules. Visit the Third Tuesday Vancouver’s Meetup page for complete details.
Net Tuesday Vancouver (February 1, Storyeum). This meetup will be attempting to answer the question “Should your nonprofit be selling merchandise?” The great thing about Net Tuesday is that they always have panelists, which means that you get at least two different perspectives. The last couple of Net Tuesday meetups I’ve been even had free food! Complete details are not out yet, but watch the Net Tuesday Meetup page for further info.
A catch-all for everything not considered a meetup – i.e. conferences/seminars/workshops.
2011 Creative Agency Panel with Rethink, DDB and TBWA\Vancouver (January 20, The Westin Bayshore Hotel). This BCAMA event promises “a refreshing, candid discussion with three of Vancouver’s most respected creative agencies”. Sounds like a good event. Open for both members and non-members. Register via the BCAMA website.
What Marketers Need to Know: 2011 Trends and Transformations (January 26, Four Seasons Hotel). This BCAIM luncheon event features four all-star panel of marketing experts from Best Buy Canada Ltd, Rethink, Ipsos ASI, and the UBC Sauder School of Business. Coinciding with Advertising Week in Vancouver, the purpose of this event is to discuss the top trends in to watch in 2011. More info here.
TOUGH TALK FOR TENDER CAUSES™ – SOCIAL STUDIES: Getting the most out of your social networking tool (January 26, Fairmont Pacific Rim). This Vancouver Board of Trade (VBoT) event features Tod Maffin, senior strategist and COO of tMedia Strategies. I believe it’s only for VBoT members, though. Consider the Net Tuesday Meetup instead (see above) if you’re not a VBoT member. More info on the VBoT website.
NABS Cannes Screening (January 27, . If you’ve ever wanted to see the world’s best TV commercials, this is your chance! This screening will feature award winners from the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Wondering what NABS is? According to its website, the National Advertising Benevolent Society (NABS) “is the only charitable organization in Canada that provides assistance to communications and related industry professionals , who may need help due to illness, injury, unemployment or financial difficulties.” Check out the organization’s website for more info about the event. Thanks to Jenn for the heads up!
Social Media Unplugged (January 29, SFU Woodward’s) . A one-day conference featuring some of the top social marketing practitioners in Canada. The list of speakers for this event is actually still growing. There are 8 currently listed, but it started out with 6 a few weeks ago, so who knows if this is the final tally. Visit the official website for more info or follow Social Media Unplugged on Twitter for the latest. I’ll be attending this conference.
The NOW Revolution Book Tour (February 15, Caprice). This is part of a tour for a new book by Jay Baer, Principal of Convince and Convert, and Amber Naslund, VP of Community Management for Radian6. Other panelists joining Jay Baer at the event include Shane Gibson and Mark Smiciklas. Your ticket also includes one copy of “The Now Revolution” so I don’t see why you shouldn’t attend. Visit Digicate.ca for more details or go directly to Eventbrite to register. If you go to this event, come find me – I’ll be there!
Are you attending any of these events? Are there any other marketing-related events around Vancouver that I missed? Let me know. Contact me or leave a comment below.
